SIGNS YOU MAY NEED EAR SYRINGING

Earwax build-up does not always cause obvious symptoms straight away. If you are experiencing any of the following, earwax may be the cause:

  • Muffled or reduced hearing in one or both ears
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Earache or mild pain inside the ear
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Itchiness inside the ear canal
  • A feeling that your ear is blocked despite no visible cause

Important: These symptoms can also have other causes. If you are unsure, Dr. Liam Regan can examine your ears during your appointment and confirm whether earwax is responsible before any treatment begins.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR WAX REMOVAL APPOINTMENT

The appointment begins with Dr. Liam Regan examining your ears to confirm that earwax is the cause of your symptoms. This takes place before any treatment begins.

If ear irrigation is appropriate, Dr. Liam Regan uses the Ear Irrigation system to gently flush warm, body-temperature water into the ear canal. This loosens and removes the wax safely and effectively. The process is repeated as needed until the canal is clear. Your ear is then dried carefully after irrigation.

Can You Hear Better After Ear Wax Removal?

Yes. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in hearing once the wax has been cleared. How much difference you feel will depend on how much wax was present and whether earwax was the sole cause of your symptoms.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

PLEASE SOFTEN YOUR WAX BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Use Cerumol or Waxsol ear drops twice daily for two days before your appointment. This makes the removal quicker, gentler, and more effective. Do not use ear drops if you have ear pain or a known perforation in your eardrum.

RISKS OF HOME EAR WAX REMOVAL

It is tempting to try to remove earwax at home, but most home methods carry risks that are worth understanding before you attempt them.

Cotton buds are one of the most common causes of earwax problems. Rather than removing wax, they tend to push it deeper into the ear canal, making blockages worse and harder to treat. In some cases they can cause pain, irritation, or damage to the ear canal.

Over-the-counter ear drops can help soften wax and are useful as preparation before a professional appointment. Used alone, however, they are unlikely to clear a significant blockage.

If your ears are blocked and home remedies have not helped, professional irrigation at Nassau Clinic is the safest and most effective option.
