Everything You Need to Know About PrEP
Q1. How well does PrEP work?
Over 99% effective against HIV if taken as prescribed.
Q2. Who is eligible for free PrEP through the HSE?
Adults at higher HIV risk (e.g., multiple partners, condomless sex) who test negative, meet HSE and kidney health criteria. We’ll check your eligibility together! Check out if you are eligible using the our PrEP Eligibility Checker tool.
Q3. What if I am not eligible for free PrEP?
No worries! We offer affordable private prescriptions for PrEP. Let’s find a solution that works for you.
Q4. How long does it take for PrEP to start working?
Daily PrEP needs 7 days for full protection.
Q5. What is the 2-1-1 PrEP rule?
Take two pills between 2 to 24 hours before sex, 1 daily during, and 1 after. It’s an on-demand option for some, but confirm with your doctor first, as it’s not recommended for everyone.
Q6. What happens if I miss a dose of PrEP?
Take it as soon as you remember. If you’re on 2-1-1 and miss a dose around sex, use condoms. We’ll help adjust your plan with no panic needed.
Q7. What not to do while taking PrEP?
Don’t skip doses or forget follow-up tests. PrEP works best when taken consistently and combined with regular STI checks. Remember, it doesn’t protect against all STIs, so using condoms is still a smart choice for extra safety.
Q8. Is 7 days of PrEP enough?
For daily PrEP, yes, it takes 7 days to build full protection. For the 2-1-1 method, start 2 days before. Let’s tailor a plan that fits your lifestyle.
Q9. Does PrEP have side effects?
Most side effects, like mild nausea, fade within a few weeks. Serious issues are rare, and we monitor you closely to keep everything on track.
Q10. Are there any long-term side effects of PrEP?
Rare. A small risk of kidney changes, but regular tests catch this early. Most use it for years without issues.
Q11. What are the downsides to PrEP?
Some get mild nausea or headaches initially. It also requires 3-month check-ups. But for most, the benefits of staying HIV-free far outweigh these!
Q12. Who should not take PrEP?
Those with severe kidney issues or allergies to PrEP ingredients. We’ll run tests first to ensure it’s safe for you.
Q13. Can I get PrEP if I don’t have insurance?
Absolutely! HSE covers eligible patients. For private scripts, costs are reasonable.
Q14. Is it safe to drink alcohol while on PrEP?
Moderate drinking is fine. Just avoid heavy sessions that might make you forget a dose. Your health comes first!
Q15. Should I tell people I’m taking PrEP?
Only if you want to! It’s your choice. Sharing can normalize PrEP, but your privacy is our priority.
Q16. Am I safe if my partner is on PrEP?
PrEP protects them, not you. Stay safe by using condoms or starting PrEP yourself. Mutual testing and open chats are key!
