PRIVATE GP CONSULTATIONS FOR PROSTATE CANCER SYMPTOMS IN DUBLIN
Noticing changes in your urinary habits can be worrying, and many men are not sure when to get checked for prostate cancer. At Nassau Clinic in Dublin, Dr Liam offers private GP consultations for men who want clarity, reassurance, and a straightforward explanation of what their symptoms might mean. Most symptoms are caused by benign conditions, but early assessment is important for your peace of mind and long term health.
If you have noticed difficulty passing urine, getting up more at night, a weak flow, discomfort, or any change that feels unusual for you, it’s always best to book a consultation. Symptoms do not always mean cancer, but they should be assessed properly.
Nassau Clinic is open Thursday evenings and weekends. Book your consultation online today and we’ll support you through every step.
WHEN TO SEE A GP ABOUT PROSTATE CANCER
You should book a GP consultation for Prostate Cancer symptoms if you notice urinary problems, changes in how often you pass urine, or symptoms that do not settle after a few weeks. We will listen to your concerns, check for any warning signs, and decide whether a prostate examination, blood tests, or a referral to a specialist clinic is needed. You do not need to wait until symptoms become severe before seeking help, as early assessment gives you more options and peace of mind.
DID YOU KNOW?
Around 4,000 men in Ireland are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and roughly 1 in 6 men will face this diagnosis at some point in their lives.
COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT REQUIRE ASSESSMENT
Book a GP appointment with us at Nassau Clinic if you notice any of the following:
- Increased frequency of urination
- Urgency or difficulty holding urine
- Weak urine stream
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Needing to get up several times at night to pass urine
- Blood in your urine or semen
- New erectile difficulties
- Pain in the pelvis or lower back
- Any worrying change in how your bladder or prostate area feels
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING
Consider prostate cancer screening if:
- You are a man aged 50 or older, even if you feel well
- You want to understand your personal risk and options
- You have a father or brother who had prostate cancer, particularly at a younger age, and may need to undertake an earlier or more regular Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood testing
WHAT HAPPENS DURING YOUR CONSULTATION
Initial Assessment and Medical History
During your consultation at Nassau Clinic, we will start by talking through your symptoms, how long you have had them, and whether they affect your daily life or sleep. It is important that you do NOT ejaculate for 72 hours (3 days) before your appointment time.
PSA Blood Testing
We may arrange a PSA blood test to measure prostate-specific antigen, a protein that can be higher in cases of prostate cancer, enlargement, or inflammation. We will compare your levels to age-specific ranges to determine whether a referral to a specialist prostate clinic is needed.
Physical Examination (DRE)
A digital rectal examination (DRE) may be recommended to assess the size, shape, and texture of your prostate. You will lie on your side while we gently insert a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to check for any hard areas, lumps, or unusual changes.

Q1. What tests are done at Nassau Clinic for prostate problems?
We can arrange PSA blood tests and perform a prostate examination at the clinic. If scans or further imaging are needed, we will refer you quickly to the right specialist or testing service in Dublin.
Q2. Do I need a PSA test if I have no symptoms?
PSA testing can be useful for some men, but it is not right for everyone. We will discuss your age, family history, and individual risk factors with you before deciding whether a test is appropriate.
Q3. What if my PSA level is high?
A raised PSA does not always mean cancer. It can also be caused by benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, or infection. We will explain your result and arrange a referral to a specialist prostate clinic if needed.
Q4. Can prostate symptoms be treated without surgery?
Many prostate symptoms can be managed with lifestyle changes or medication. The right treatment depends on the cause of your symptoms and will be discussed with you during your consultation or by a specialist if you are referred.
Q5. How quickly can I get a referral to a specialist?
If needed, referrals to specialists can be made as soon as we have your laboratory blood test results. We aim to ensure you get appointments and tests without delay.
Q6. Is prostate cancer common?
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men in Ireland, but many cases grow slowly and do not cause serious problems. Early assessment and monitoring give you the best chance of effective treatment if needed.
