PRIVATE UTI CONSULTATION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN DUBLIN
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections in adults. Around half of all women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime ↗. While less common in men, a UTI in a male patient is more likely to point to an underlying condition and should always be assessed by a doctor.
At Nassau Clinic, Dr Liam Regan provides private UTI consultations and treatment in Dublin. No GP referral is required.

WHAT IS A UTI?
A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply, most commonly in the bladder. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Infections affecting the bladder, often called cystitis or a bladder infection, are the most common type and are generally straightforward to treat. If left untreated, however, the infection can spread to the kidneys, which is a more serious condition requiring prompt medical attention.
UTIs are most often caused by bacteria from the digestive tract, with Escherichia coli (E. coli) responsible for the majority of cases. Women are more susceptible due to the shorter length of the female urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.
UTI SYMPTOMS
UTI symptoms can vary depending on which part of the urinary tract is affected. While many symptoms are shared between men and women, there are some differences worth noting.
UTI Symptoms in Women
- Frequent urge to urinate - often with little urine passed
- Burning or stinging sensation when urinating
- Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine
- Pain or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvis
- Blood in the urine - which may appear pink or brown in colour
UTI Symptoms in Men
- Frequent urge to urinate - often with little urine passed
- Burning or stinging sensation when urinating
- Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine
- Blood in the urine
- Pain in the lower abdomen, groin or back
- Discharge from the penis — this is more often a sign of a sexually transmitted infection than a UTI, and STI testing may be recommended alongside urine testing
In older adults, UTI symptoms can be less obvious and may include confusion, fatigue or generally feeling unwell. However, bacteria can be present in the urine without causing an infection, and confusion alone does not confirm a UTI. A proper clinical assessment is needed before treatment is started.
When UTI Symptoms May Need Urgent Medical Attention
If you develop a high fever, chills, back or side pain, or nausea and vomiting alongside urinary symptoms, the infection may have spread to the kidneys. These symptoms require urgent same-day medical attention through this clinic, your GP, or a hospital emergency department. If you feel severely unwell, go to your nearest emergency department or call 112 or 999.
HOW IS A UTI DIAGNOSED
A UTI is usually assessed based on your symptoms and medical history. You may also need to provide a urine sample to help assess your symptoms and rule out other conditions.
A urine dipstick can provide additional information in some patients, but it is not suitable for everyone. HSE guidance does not recommend dipstick testing as a diagnostic aid in men under 65 or during pregnancy.
A urine culture may be recommended in certain situations, including suspected UTIs in men, pregnancy, recurrent UTIs or more complicated infections. It can identify bacteria in the urine and help guide antibiotic treatment.
At Nassau Clinic, Dr Liam Regan will assess your symptoms and medical history to determine whether a UTI is likely and whether further testing or treatment is needed.

HOW UTIS ARE TREATED AT NASSAU CLINIC
Some UTIs may clear without antibiotics, but antibiotics are commonly prescribed when bacterial infection is suspected and treatment is appropriate. The antibiotic prescribed and the length of the course will depend on the type of bacteria identified and your medical history.
Recurrent UTI Treatment
Recurrent UTIs are usually defined as two or more confirmed infections within six months, or three or more within twelve months. Treatment may include antibiotics for the current infection, lifestyle changes and preventive options such as low-dose antibiotics. For postmenopausal women, vaginal oestrogen may also help reduce recurrence. Dr Liam will recommend the most suitable approach based on your history and, where appropriate, urine culture results.
Treatment for a Simple UTI
Simple UTIs are often treated with a short course of antibiotics. Symptoms should improve within a few days. Complete the full course, even if you feel better sooner.
When a UTI Requires Hospital Treatment
A UTI that spreads to the kidneys may require hospital treatment with intravenous antibiotics. If your symptoms suggest a more serious infection, Dr Liam Regan will advise you on the appropriate next steps and arrange a referral to the Emergency Department of your local Hospital where needed.

UTI TREATMENT GP CONSULTATIONS FAQs
Q1. Can a UTI clear up on its own?
Some mild UTIs do resolve without treatment, but this is not reliable. Leaving an infection untreated can allow it to spread to the kidneys, which is a more serious condition. If you have symptoms, it is worth getting tested promptly.
Q2. Can I treat myself for a UTI?
There are no over-the-counter antibiotics available in Ireland, so self-treatment is not an option. Urinary alkalinising sachets can ease discomfort but do not treat the infection. A consultation with Dr Liam Regan will confirm whether antibiotics are needed.
Q3. What could be mistaken for a UTI?
UTI symptoms can overlap with conditions such as STIs, thrush, bacterial vaginosis and prostatitis. At Nassau Clinic, Dr Liam Regan will assess your symptoms and medical history to identify the likely cause. If further testing is needed, he will advise you on the next steps.
Q4. Do I need a urine test to get UTI treatment?
You do not always need a urine test to treat a simple UTI when symptoms are clear and typical. A doctor will assess your symptoms and medical history to decide whether testing is needed.
Q5. I'm pregnant and have UTI symptoms — what should I do?
UTIs during pregnancy require prompt assessment and treatment, even if symptoms are mild, as untreated infections can lead to complications for both mother and baby. Contact the clinic for the earliest available appointment. If you cannot be seen quickly, contact your GP or maternity hospital.
Q6. Is nitrofurantoin a first-choice antibiotic for UTIs in Ireland?
Yes, nitrofurantoin is the preferred first-choice empiric antibiotic for treating uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Ireland, provided it is not contraindicated. Dr Liam Regan will assess your symptoms and medical history to determine whether it is appropriate for you.
Q7. How much does a private UTI appointment cost at Nassau Clinic?
A private UTI consultation at Nassau Clinic costs €100. If a prescription is issued, pharmacy charges are paid separately. Itemised receipts are provided for insurance reclaim. Check with your provider, as cover for GP visits varies by policy.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR FOR UTI SYMPTOMS
If you are experiencing UTI symptoms, it is worth getting assessed sooner rather than later. Left untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and lead to a more serious infection. At Nassau Clinic, Dr Liam Regan will assess your symptoms and medical history and advise on the appropriate treatment and whether further testing is needed.
