WHAT IS VERTIGO?
Vertigo is the false sensation that you, or the objects around you, are spinning or moving when you are not. It is different from general dizziness, which is more of a lightheaded or giddy feeling. Vertigo can last anywhere from a few seconds to several days and is often accompanied by nausea, balance problems, tinnitus, or a feeling of fullness in the ear.
It is worth noting that vertigo is sometimes incorrectly used to describe a fear of heights. The correct term for that is acrophobia. Vertigo is a medical symptom, not a diagnosis in itself, and in most cases there is an underlying cause that can be identified and treated.
WHAT CAUSES VERTIGO?
Vertigo is most commonly caused by a condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV. This occurs when small calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move into the ear canals, disrupting the brain's sense of balance. It is the most treatable form of vertigo and responds well to the Epley manoeuvre.
